Summer Flex Plan
The Summer Flex dining plan is similar to the Flex Plans offered during the regular academic year. The Summer Flex Plan is designed for students who eat meals during nontraditional hours, like to snack, eat more than three meals per day, or prefer our à la carte dining centers. It operates as a debit card account with which you have a designated amount of Flex Dollars to spend per semester. Your Flex Dollars can be accessed using your Hokie Passport ID card when you purchase food and beverages in the dining centers. Each time you access your Flex account, it will be debited for the amount of your purchase and the remaining balance will appear on your receipt.
Summer Flex Plans are only offered to Virginia Tech students enrolled in at least one of the full six-week summer sessions.
Summer Flex Plan FAQ
See the chart above for the Summer Flex Plan cost per six-week summer session.
With a Summer Flex Plan you never have to worry about carrying cash or using a certain number of meals per week. Your Flex Dollars may be used in any allotment and at any time throughout the summer session. Each time you access your account, your balance is displayed on your receipt. If your Flex Dollar balance gets low, you may purchase Flex Addition Dollars to add buying power to your plan. You will receive a 50 percent discount in our à la carte facilities and at least a 67 percent discount in our all-you-care-to-eat dining center (D2) when you have a Flex Plan.
A word of caution about the Flex Plan: The summer 7 and 19 Meals Plans guarantee that you have a set number of meals per week every week throughout the session. Since the Summer Flex Plan offers a certain amount of Flex Dollars per summer session, it is possible to run out of Flex Dollars before the session is over. So if you choose the Summer Flex Plan, budget your Flex Dollars carefully.
Flex Addition Dollars offer students with Summer Flex or 19 Meal Plans the opportunity to add buying power to their plan and receive the same Flex discounts. Additional money deposited into a Flex Dollars account is accessed automatically through your Hokie Passport ID card once the initial Flex Dollars are used. You never have to wonder about your balance because it will appear on the register display every time you access your account. Flex Addition Dollars will receive the Flex discount as long as you have a major dining plan. Flex Addition Dollars revert to Dining Dollars if you don't have a major dining plan. Since Flex Addition Dollars can be used only in our dining centers, parents and guardians can be sure that this money will be spent only on food and beverages.
Flex Addition Dollars may be added at any time during the year at the Hokie Passport Office (located at 100 Student Services Building). You can also make deposits at a cash-to-card machine, which can be found at G. Burke Johnston Student Center, the Math Emporium, Squires Student Center, the Student Services Building, West End Market, or outside of Hokie Grill & Co.
You can also sign up for Flex Addition Dollars online. Flex Addition Dollars deposits carry over from year to year and remain stored on your Hokie Passport ID card until you graduate or resign from the University. If the account is not used for a period of 12 consecutive months, it will be closed according to state policy (see Dining Plan Refund Policy).
If you do not spend all of your initial Summer Flex Dollars by the end of the first summer session, they will carry over and receive the same Flex discount as long as you purchase a dining plan for the second summer session. Similarly, the remaining Flex Dollars carry over from first session and any second session will carry over to the fall semester as long as you purchase a dining plan for the fall semester.
Carry-over Flex Dollars will not appear in your account until the current semester's initial Flex Dollars are used. Initial Flex Dollars received with the purchase of a Major Flex Plan (either Summer I, Summer II, fall or spring semesters) must be used by the end of the spring semester.
Flex Addition Dollars purchases carry over from semester to semester as long as you are a student, and they will continue to receive the Flex discount as long as you have a dining plan.
Summer 7 and 19 Meals-Per-Week Dining Plans
With a meals-per-week plan, you receive a designated number of meals per week throughout the six-week summer session. When you use your dining plan in an all-you-care-to-eat dining center, one meal is subtracted from your total weekly meal allotment. These plans give you great value and allow you to choose daily between many options. On-campus summer residents must have a Summer Flex Plan or a 19 Meals-Per-Week dining plan. Off-campus students can choose from these two plans or select the 7 Meals-Per-Week dining plan.
Summer Meals-Per-Week Plans FAQ
Summer Dining Plan Rates:
See the chart above for the 19 Meal Plan or 7 Meal Plan (off-campus only) cost per six-week summer session.
Meals dining plan prices are based upon a concept called the missed-meal factor. We know that most students do not eat all their meals each week, so we calculate our rates accordingly. This helps to keep the cost of your dining plan lower. When a new week begins (at Tuesday breakfast), you will start over again with the same number of meals. Therefore, there are no refunds or carryovers to the next week for meals not used. Meals Plan holders may use only one of their guaranteed meals during each designated meal period (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).
Meals-per-week dining plans can only be used at D2. If you plan to eat in Au Bon Pain or Sbarro at Squires Food Court on a regular basis, you should consider the Summer Flex Plan.
You may add Flex Dollars to the 19 Meal Plan. You are not eligible for Flex Addition Dollars with the 7 Meal Plan.
Summer Dining Plan Refund Policy
Summer Flex Plan
Summer Flex Plan holders will be charged a forfeiture fee of $100 during the first three days of the summer session. Beginning week two and throughout the remainder of the semester, students will forfeit the base cost and will be refunded any unused discounted dollars remaining in the Summer Flex Plan account.
19 Meals-Per-Week Plan
Students holding a 19 Meals-Per-Week Plan who leave the University during the first three days of summer session classes will forfeit $50. After the first week of class, the semester dining plan charge, less $50, will be prorated at 67 percent during week two and 33 percent during week three. The student will be charged a weekly rate for each week enrolled plus $50. A student who withdraws after the beginning of the fourth week of the semester will be charged the full dining rate.
7 Meals-Per-Week Plan
Students holding a 7 Meals-Per-Week Plan who leave the University during the first three days of summer session classes will forfeit $35. After the first week of class, the semester dining plan charge, less $35, will be prorated at 67 percent during week two and 33 percent during week three. The student will be charged a weekly rate for each week enrolled plus $35. A student who withdraws after the beginning of the fourth week of the semester will be charged the full dining rate.
